THE JOURNEY, DAY BY DAY

Six days, one by one

A busy beach on Morocco's Atlantic coast
Day01

Casablanca · Azemmour

Casablanca → Azemmour

Pick-up at Casablanca airport when your flight lands, with a sign bearing the agency's name, and a short drive to Azemmour. It is a small, quiet town: the walls and fortifications around the medina are very well preserved, and the old town, set on top of a cliff, overlooks the Oum er Rbia river and its estuary. North of town stretches the long sandy beach of El Haouzia.

Day02

Azemmour · El Jadida · Oualidia

Azemmour → El Jadida → Oualidia

After breakfast, you head south along the Atlantic coast. First stop is El Jadida, formerly Mazagan, fortified by the Portuguese in the early 16th century and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll see the cisterns, the gates and the sea walls, with time left for the newer town and its markets. Then the coastal road to Oualidia, more scenic and less crowded, with plenty of places along the way to stop for seafood.

Day03

Oualidia · Safi · Essaouira

Oualidia → Safi · Hamidouch → Essaouira

Breakfast, then south along the coast, one beach after another. In Safi, an industrial port city, you'll see the old Portuguese fortress. Farther on, the coastline turns high and rugged. Stop at the Kasbah of Hamidouch, the citadel Moulay Ismail built in the 17th century at the mouth of the Tensift river. You'll reach Essaouira in the afternoon and settle into your riad in the heart of the medina.

Day04

Essaouira, Pearl of the Atlantic

Essaouira → full day → at your own pace

A full day in Essaouira at your own pace. The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, keeps its ramparts facing the ocean and whitewashed houses that recall the white villages of Andalusia. Phoenicians, Romans, Berbers, Portuguese and French all passed through, and the town is still a crossroads of cultures. At lunchtime it is worth having the day's fish and seafood, which arrives at the fish market every morning. The beach is close by, and you can surf if you like.

Day05

Essaouira · Marrakech · Casablanca

Essaouira → Marrakech → Casablanca

After breakfast, you head north by way of Marrakech. If you leave early, there is time for a stop in the red city before continuing: the highway links Marrakech and Casablanca in about two and a half hours. In Casablanca, you'll visit the Hassan II Mosque, built on the shore right by the ocean and one of the largest in the world. Check in at your hotel for the last night.
