Six days, one by one

Day01

Arrival in Marrakech

Airport → Marrakech

Pickup at Marrakech airport at your flight's arrival time and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for a first walk around the city at your own pace. The natural plan is to get lost in the alleys of the souk and head to Djemaa el Fna square, the heart of the medina, in the late afternoon, when the food stalls go up and you can have dinner right there.

Overnight: hotel · Marrakech

Day02

Marrakech · Ouarzazate · Dades

Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka · Ouarzazate → Dades Valley

Departure south across the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 m (7,415 ft), with stops in Berber villages, at viewpoints and at an argan oil cooperative, where they explain how it is made. At midday, Ouarzazate: the Taourirt kasbah, one of the best preserved in the country, which belonged to the Glaoui family, and the film museum. In the afternoon, the Dades Valley and the Monkey Fingers, a rock formation with curious shapes.

Day03

Dades · Todra · Merzouga

Boumalne Dades → Todra · Tinghir · Erfoud → Merzouga

Departure east through the Todra Gorges, where you'll walk along the river and its small waterfalls, between rock walls popular with climbers. The Tinghir palm grove shows the contrast between the green oasis and the arid land around it. Then Erfoud, known for its fossils, since the area was once under water, and for the dinosaur remains found there. Arrival in Merzouga in the afternoon.

Overnight: hotel facing the dunes · Erg Chebbi

Day04

Merzouga · Khamlia · night in the dunes

Merzouga → Khamlia · Mefis → Erg Chebbi

A morning around the dunes: the Merzouga oasis and Khamlia, the village of the Gnawa, descendants of enslaved people brought from sub-Saharan Africa, who keep their music alive. You'll cross a river of sand, climb a hill with a view over the whole erg and reach Mefis, next to the old kohl mines. Tea with a nomadic family among the dunes. Back to the hotel at midday and, in the late afternoon, an hour by camel to the camp.

Overnight: Berber tent camp · Erg Chebbi

Day05

Merzouga · Rissani · Agdz · Ouarzazate

Erg Chebbi → Rissani · Agdz → Ouarzazate

Back to the hotel for a shower and breakfast. First stop at the market in Rissani, a key town on the caravan routes that linked north and south. The road continues through the Draa Valley, one of the largest in the country, dotted with kasbahs that once defended the region, with walks in the palm grove, where you feel the temperature drop as you enter. Lunch stop in Agdz and a visit to the Tamnougalt kasbah before reaching Ouarzazate.

Day06

Ouarzazate · Aït Ben Haddou · Marrakech

Ouarzazate → Aït Ben Haddou · High Atlas → Marrakech

A morning at the Ouarzazate film studios, where movies such as Gladiator and Babel were shot. On the way to Marrakech, a stop at the ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a set for The Mummy and Kingdom of Heaven. It was a caravan stop, where travelers swapped camels for horses to cross the mountains. Then winding roads through the High Atlas with stops at viewpoints, arrival in Marrakech and transfer to your hotel or the airport.
