Panoramic view of the blue town of Chefchaouen
Day01

Tangier · Chefchaouen

Tangier → Chefchaouen

Pickup at Tangier airport when your flight lands and a panoramic tour of the city: the medina, the Grand Mosque, and 9 April Square, one of the largest in Tangier and a meeting point for locals. Then the road to Chefchaouen, in the Rif. The best way to see the town is to get lost in its narrow streets, lined with small shops between houses painted blue and white.

Day02

Chefchaouen · Ifrane · Azrou · Midelt

Chefchaouen → Fez · Ifrane · Azrou → Midelt

A driving day south, through Fez and into the Middle Atlas. You stop in Ifrane, known as Morocco's Little Switzerland, at 1,713 m (5,620 ft), with Central European-style streets built for its cold winters. Then Azrou and its large cedar forests, where Barbary macaques live in the wild. Overnight in Midelt, between the Middle and High Atlas.

Day03

Midelt · Erfoud · Merzouga

Midelt → Ziz Valley · Erfoud → Merzouga

Heading south through the Ziz Valley, where the arid landscape contrasts with the palm groves along the banks and the daily life of the river villages. The Ziz runs about 300 km (186 mi) until it fades into the Sahara near the Algerian border. Around midday, Erfoud, known for its fossils and desert roses. You reach Merzouga in the afternoon, at the foot of the dunes, with time to walk on the sand and watch the sunset.

Day04

Merzouga · Khamlia · camp

Merzouga → Khamlia · Mfis → camp

A morning around Merzouga: the oasis and the village of Khamlia, home to the Gnawa community, descendants of enslaved people brought from sub-Saharan Africa, who share their music with you. A view over the desert from a hilltop, then Mfis, a former settlement of French workers from the now-abandoned kohl mines. Tea with a nomad family among the dunes and, in the afternoon, an hour by camel to camp, where dinner is served in the tents.
